Gunnera manicata

A huge leafed plant known as the Brazilian Giant Rhubarb, a hardy perennial which is a massive, moisture lover, it requires rich soil in sun or part shade and makes a dramatic waterside statement. Often found planted around lakes in stately homes etc, it can also be grown pretty well in a large pot which will contain this monster!. It grows from thick compact rhizomes which from "Crowns" from which the thick spiked rhubarb like stems emerge once spring arrives, these then unfurl into broad kidney shaped leaves up to 4ft across. Large, erect conical almost egg shaped rusty coloured flowers appear from the base into the warmer summer months.. A real oddity.
