Musa sikkimensis 'Bengal Tiger'

The darjeeling banana, originating from Sikkim Bangladesh, develops huge paddle shaped leaves which are marked with deep maroon streaks though them. Cold hardy similar to Musa basjoo which is 'root hardy' meaning that if the trunk is cut down by frost new shoots will appear around its base the next year often producing lots of "Pups'. If the trunk is protected with a straw wrap it continues on its upright accent!

Superb in an exotic planting effect or popping up in a mixed border amongst grasses etc.

Must be grown in full sun to part shade in moist but well drained soil best in a large container, or a sunken container in the ground to make it easier to lift later. keep in a well sheltered location away from winds which will shred its large leaves . This banana must have winter protection from frost. Water regularly and keep well fed every two weeks for best results.
